Employment Experience

To acquire the employment experience needed for overseas jobs in the future, fresh graduates should set their eyes on finding local employment first. DOLE said new graduates need not worry about looking jobs here in the Philippines.

Fresh grads need not look far for employment, says DOLE
By Mayen Jaymalin

MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today advised new graduates to seek local employment instead of looking overseas so they would not end up jobless for a long time.

Labor Undersecretary Rosalinda Baldoz said local employment remains to be the better option for new graduates at the moment.

Baldoz explained that new graduates will have difficulty finding jobs overseas because they still lack the necessary experience being required by foreign employers.

“For nurses alone, foreign countries require two- to three-year experience working in tertiary hospitals, so new graduates, even if they passed the licensure examination cannot be hired within a year after graduating,” she stressed.

DOLE also said the government, and various colleges and universities are mounting a series of job fairs nationwide.

“DOLE has organized job fairs in the different regions so we could assist our new labor force entrants, primarily the new graduates find productive job opportunities and surmount the global financial crisis,” Labor Secretary Marianito Roque said.

According to Roque, the DOLE’s annual job fairs have benefited new graduates and other job seekers. He said that last year’s job fairs helped over half a million jobseekers.

He said his department has already instructed several regional offices to conduct their own job fairs this year.

The DOLE earlier said it is preparing appropriate measures to prevent a further rise in the unemployment rate, especially with the projected one million college students graduating this summer.

Many Job Applicants Unqualified

Thousands apply under trade agreement but few are qualified — POEA

THOUSANDS OF nurses and caregivers have applied for jobs in Japan under a bilateral trade agreement, but the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said many applicants may be unqualified.

POEA Administrator Jennifer J. Manalili said in an interview with reporters yesterday that nearly 7,000 nurses and caregivers have applied for 600 positions under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA).

Under JPEPA, Japan will hire 200 nurses and 400 caregivers as apprentices and provide them with language training before taking the licensure examination. They will receive an allowance in the process.

"There are some who will not qualify to enter the list that we are going to give to Japan because of the requirements... like letters and degrees for four-year colleges. We are now in the final stages of completing that list," Ms. Manalili said. — ENJD

Nursing Can Be A Rewarding Career

By Michael Russell

A career in nursing can be rewarding and exciting. Many people think that a nursing degree is not as respected as a medical school degree. It is important to realize that nurses are needed in growing numbers throughout the US. Nurses take care of patients and do a fairly large amount of the physical work involved. Nurses give shots, administer medication, and monitor and change IVs.

Nurses are educated in nursing school prior to getting a job. The early years of nursing school focus on beginner subjects such as how to wash hands properly and how to give a shop. As nurses progress through their education, they are placed into clinical settings to obtain real hands on experience. Once school is finished, nurses apply for jobs in their desired area. Because nurses are around a lot of medications, a drug test is usually required prior to acceptance of a job. Nurses can specialize in areas such as renal therapy, emergency room nursing, or surgical nursing. The specialties available are endless.

There are a lot of options available in the nursing field. Hospitals provide thousands of jobs to nurses. There is also the option of a doctor's office or nursing home. Nurses are needed for private home care. Nurses are also on staff at schools. The benefit of getting a nursing job at a school is three months off during the summer months.

There are many great things about the nursing field. Nurses are not stuck behind a desk for 8 hours a day staring at a computer. Nurses get to interact with many different people on a daily basis. Some nursing jobs involve working longer shift for three days a week and having a long weekend in between. The pay is not bad for a nurse and many places are always hiring new nurses. Most nurses wear scrubs to work which can be very comfortable and stylish.

There are also a few downsides to a career in nursing. Nurses are always around sick people, therefore they have a greater risk of becoming sick themselves. Sick people also tend to be cranky and nurses have to deal with angry patients with a smile. Some doctors may treat nurses with little respect. Nursing is considered by some people to be a woman's field. People may treat male nurses differently. Nurses have to deal with the reality that some of their patients will die no matter how much they nurture them. Nurses also may get attached to a patient in a hospital setting, only to never see them again after they are released. Nurses have to clean up after patients who have diarrhea or urinary accidents. They have to change bloody bandages. Some of the things they see are graphic and upsetting. Nursing is not for the weak at heart.

A career in nursing is rewarding, but it is not without its challenges. A nurse may not find her niche right away. With a little experience and experimentation, a nurse can find the most suitable job placement available to her.

The Male Nurse: A Non Traditional Occupation

This year, my cousin graduated as Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After seven months, he then took the Nursing Board Exams. Although the results won't be out until after 3 months of waiting, I hope he will pass and become a full fledged nurse. He has dreams of working abroad; and passing the Board Exams is the next step to take toward his dream.

Although nurses in the past were mostly women, the trend of male students taking nursing in college is steadily increasing. I remember in the movie "Meet the Parents", the character of Ben Stiller was a male nurse and it was seen by the other characters as an unusual choice for a career. He was stereotyped and given a hard time by the family of his girlfriend, especially the father.

Well, that movie was shown in 2000. Since then, the concept of the male nurse has come a long way towards general acceptance. They are still the minority, but that does not mean they are at a disadvantage.

An Introduction to Nursing Jobs

By George Preston

Becoming a nurse is a transition that goes deeper than the knowledge gained from training and is an ongoing process. There are practical changes. Becoming a nurse is really a rather involved process. You have to first decide whether you like nursing and at what level you want to explore. Becoming a nurse practitioner is a good career choice. Demand for health care professionals in the United States continues to grow as time goes on.

Becoming a nurse is not an easy process, especially due to a lack of nursing educators. Still, becoming a nurse can open doors to several jobs in hospitals, clinics and schools, and it can be a very self satisfying career for people who want to help others. Becoming a nurse assistant generally does not take very long. You will continue to learn about your role as a nurse assistant once you secure employment. Becoming a nurse midwife on the other hand requires a nursing degree. Unlike lay midwives, nurse midwives can also legally prescribe necessary tests and medications to patients.

Prerequisite courses are likely to have been included in a biology or health related major. Besides English composition, oral communications, math and sociology or anthropology, seven courses in different science topics are required. Prerequisites are pretty much the same, and the courses within most nursing programs seem very similar.

Choose your employer carefully. If you do not think that you would fit in a particular company, you probably should not even apply there. Choosing the career for your future can be one of the toughest decisions you will have to make.
